W. Somerset Maugham wrote great classics such as the Razor's Edge, Of Human Bondage , Rain etc.
Like many great men of letters, he was often asked to give advice to young, aspiring writers. He once advised the mother of one such boy: " Madam , give your son $ 500 and let him go to hell - literally. Five hundred dollars will allow him to travel around a bit, and finally he'll become poor.
" He'll meet all kinds of people, and then, if he's got any writer in him, he'd show it ."
