Thoughts from great minds

                   Thoughts from great minds

What you are, is God's gift to you, what you make of life is your gift to God.

Many a genius has been slow of growth. Oak that flourish for a thousand years do not spring up in bounty like a reed.

Experience is the comb that life gives you after you lose your hair.

Lack of confidence is not the result of difficulty, the difficulty comes from lack of confidence.

Conscience is God's preserve in man.

Smooth runs the water where the brook is deep.

Co-operation is doing with a smile what you have to do anyhow.

A heart with compassion, is a temple of God. Make your life a rose that speaks silently in the language of fragrance.

We are all of the same religion without knowing it.

Science without religion is lame  , religion without science is blind.

A simple technique for success

                    A simple technique for success

There was a rich land lord in a village . He left a lot of property to his two sons. Of the two, the elder one prospered and the younger one suffered huge losses. A wise man from a village in the neighbourhood was curious to find out the reason. So he came to that village. On the first night he went to the younger brother's house and asked for shelter. He was fed and given permission to spend that night there. Next day, early morning the wise man heard a loud noise.the younger brother was waking up his servants and shouting at them ordered them to go the fields for work and he himself went back to sleep again.
The traveller with the permission, spent the next night at the elder brother's house. After a hearty meal he was sleeping. Next day early morning he woke up at the kind words of the master addressing his servants, " come on, let us go to the fields for work. "
Now the wise man understood the secret behind the success of this master who participated in the work along with his workers. And this team spirit in the work was the key to prosperity. Where as the other brother left all the work to the men without supervision that led to the downfall.

Pilgrimage

                           Pilgimage

The tradition perceives the earth as a reservoir of energy or spiritual power. From the highest mountains of the Himalayas to Ireland's holy springs, features of landscape have been recognized by the enlightened as places where the earth's spiritual pulse is most strongly felt.
Traveling across the landscape towards a certain destination appears in many traditions as a metaphor for the process of inner spiritual growth and acquisition of knowledge. This is seen in its most literal sense in the act of pilgrimage in which physical and spiritual journey are simultaneous. In doing so, they hope to develop intimacy with nature, different kinds of people and more complete self and a closer relationship with the divine.
The idea of a pilgrimage without destination when the journey traveled is the goal, was thus expressed by the poet Walt whitman, who said,' The universe itself as a road, as many roads for traveling souls.'
Shankara, the famous philosopher goes a further step in pointing out that all the places of pilgrimage, all sacred waters are within.
In kashi panchaka ( a poem of five verses on Kashi, a pilgrimage center in India ), he says,' This body is Kashi, all pervading knowledge is the flowing river Ganges, devotion, faith is Gaya ( a sacred place of pilgrimage), meditation on the feet of the preceptor is Prayaga ( a pilgrimage center), this soul in me is the Almighty. When all are in my body, what other pilgrimage is needed?

The value of Pi

In the Ganitapada, the second part of the text Aryabhatteeyam, Aryabhatta gives the methods for determining for determining square root cube and cube root of a given number. while giving the formulae for finding areas and volumes of some of the geometrical objects, he also gives the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle, which is nothing but the value of Pi.

Chaturadhikam shatamashtagunam dvashashtistatha sahasranam ,

ayutadvayavishkambhasyaasanno vrttaparinaahah .

One hundred and four multiplied by eight and added to sixty-two thousand will be the approximate ( asanna ) perimeter of a circle whose diameter is twenty thousand.

104 X 8 +62,000 = 20,000 Pi ( 2 Pi R )

62832 / 20,000 = Pi
 so Pi = 3.1416.

By explicitly using the word approximate, the author suggests that the number is irrational. The value of Pi given here turns out to be equal to 3.1416
A milestone in the history of mathematics 1

Sanctity of human relationship

                                   Sanctity of human relationship

With the joint family system gone and with the advent of nuclear family and working parents and onslaught of modern technology, children are left to themselves. So celebration of Father's day and Mother's day has become a necessity to inculcate the age old moral values in children. Now people realize and come together in the joy of honoring tradition and family values.

The modern conveniences and technological access to the world pale in comparison to the incomparable worth of real human contact and touch.
Life is the first precious gift, love is the second and understanding is the third. And it is the family bedrock that builds, cements and fosters all the three. People admit to finding happiness only in spending real time with family and friends.
Recent survey shows that the simplest formula in the world to make people happy is:-

Family + Food = Happiness.

The solid foundations for a good family are father and mother.Apart from providing food and shelter, it is the father who gives protection to the family.
There is a saying in Sanskrit that the father is greater than the sky and the mother is greater than the earth. The sky denotes vastness and encompassing protection. Earth represents service with patience. The care that a father gives to his  children is immense and incomparable. The classical letters of William Hazlett's letters to his son, Jawaharlal Nehru's letters to his daughter immortalize the warmth and this caring aspect of a father.
Many successful sportspersons, writers, business men, artists and great people learnt about love, family tradition, values, the work ethics, loyalty and all of the characteristics that helped to mould them in pursuing and achieving the desired goal only from the inspiration , guidance and support they gained from their dad.

Children are the hope of mankind because they carry the values further to future. Like a plant, which needs Sunlight, soil and water to grow, values , too, must be shared, cultivated and protected. Children, after all are not endowed with an innate ability to distinguish good from bad.  Long lasting Impressions can be made on fresh wet clay only. Like wise the values can be imprinted on fresh tender minds only. For this, the role model is father.

A maxim from Chanakya Niti Shastra summarises the attitude of a father towards his children.
Let him pamper the child up to five years, he has to be very strict with him till ten years of age. When the son reaches the age of sixteen, he should be treated like a friend.
The father should pamper the child, but should correct him with love. After five, when the child interacts with the world, bad tendencies are likely to develop. So a father should be vigilant and should be strict and punish him also, apart from showing love. When the son attains the age of sixteen, he should be advised about good and bad like a friend. What a beautiful psychology behind this !
It can be seen that the intellectual progress and character development of a child depend to a large degree on the parents, on the common sense of his parents to accurately judge a situation and then take necessary action. Adolescence is a time when dependency causes hostility. Teenagers crave independence. To inspire confidence in teenagers , they should be given opportunity to use their creativity and make their own decision , under the able guidance of their father. To be helpful, parents need to learn empathy- an ability to respond genuinely to a child's moods and feelings without being infected by them.
Such a great responsibility on the part of a father !
It is the love, care, strict watch on the child putting him on the right path, guiding him at every step and enkindling ambition and helping him in achieving the desired goal of his life is the mission of a devoted father.
Family is a boon.It is mom and dad only who provide children with the greatest gift of all - unconditional love. They rejoice in every success of their children. They give moral and physical support in times of their distress. Thus when shared joy doubles and grief lessens. A son also feels great knowing that he can always rely on his dad for support and guidance. So a son's attitude towards his father is love with respect. He should realize and feel the warmth of love even in his father's strictness which is only for his good.
A father's delight is summarized in a Sanskrit maxim thus,
In this world, generally one is jealous of the other's prosperity. Only there are two persons in the world who want that they should be excelled by their subordinates. One is teacher and the other is father.A father always takes pride in the excellence of his children. He sacrifices every thing to make his children successful.Such is the greatness of a father !

So the celebration of Dad's day should not be limited to one day only that too by making cards and sharing sweets with him.The love and gratitude towards the Dad should be treasured and cherished throughout the life.

Points to ponder for a week

Points to ponder for a week

  • A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty. Unless there is opposing wind, a kite cannot rise.Opposition and adversity give us a chance to rise to new heights.
  • We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.
  • That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do, not that the nature of the thing itself is changed, but that power to do is increased.
  • Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.
  • Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.
  • What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.
  • The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve the most of the world's problems.
Ponder over these, absorb and adopt them, you will open up the treasure of inexhaustible power in you.
You will be amazed to discover the fountain of unique joy in and around you.

The value of a Treasure Hoard

Once upon a time, there was a priest who was both avaricious and rich. He loved jewels, which he collected, constantly adding more pieces to his wonderful hoard, which he kept securely locked away hidden from any eyes but his own.
The priest had a friend who visited him one day and who expressed interest in seeing the gems.
' I would be delighted to take them out, so that I too, could look at them", said the priest.
So the collection was brought and the two feasted their eyes on the beautiful treasure for a long time, lost in admiration.
When the time came for him to leave, the priest's friend said:
" Thank you for giving me the treasure ! ''
"Do not thank me for some thing which you have not got", said the priest, " for I have not given you the jewels and they are not yours at all."
His friend answered,
" As you know, I have had as much pleasure from looking at the treasures as you, so there is no difference between us,as you yourself only look at them- except that you have the trouble and expense of finding, buying and looking after them."

One should not feel jealous of other's possessions, and such should be the spirit of enjoyment.

Grand daughter's sled

A man named Ivan lived with his elderly father and young daughter. At that time, so long ago, old people were thought to be useless. They were taken to the forest and left to die, all alone. Now that the old man was feeble and could no longer earn a living, Ivan tied to him on to his daughter's sled.
' Where are you taking grand father ?' asked the girl.
" To the forest ," replied Ivan.
" But why, father ? He is too weak to cut down trees or pick berries ."
" Never mind why, daughter. It's something I must do. There is no other way for me. I am helpless."
" Can I come too ?" asked the girl.
" Yes, but ask no more questions ."
The girl ran behind the sled, stopping here and there to pick wild flowers for her grand father. When they came to the middle of the forest, Ivan said, "I'm sorry to leave you here, father, but you know it is the custom of our people ."
" You can't leave grand father out here," said the girl. He will starve or be killed by the wolves.
" He is old and can no longer work. Further more, it is a custom followed by all in our village. I have no choice, dear daughter ."
The wise girl thought for a moment and said, " But we can't leave my sled behind, because when you grow old, I'll need it to carry you into the forest when you become old."
Ivan then realized the truth of the girl's statement and felt very sorry for his action." You are right, daughter. I should not leave my dear father here. Let's take grand father home. But don't tell any of our neighbours that he is still with us."
They hid the old man in a room at the back and kept his existence a great secret.

Soon afterward, a terrible famine swept the land. Food became scarce and the people starved. Ivan had less and less to take to his aged father. The old man did not complain.
The famine continued and the villagers ate the last of the wheat and rye. They ate even the seed grain and had nothing to plant in the spring. There was no hope of survival.
Ivan took a small piece of hard bread to his father and told him that the people were starving. And nothing remained for them to eat.
" Nonsense" said grand father. " Take the straw roof from the barn and thrash it well. You will find that there is more than a handful of grain left in the thatch. Plant the grain and you will get a healthy crop.
Ivan did as he was told and soon had a fine crop of rye. The villagers were grateful and asked him where he got such excellent advice.
" From my father, a wise man indeed," replied Ivan.
" your father is dead ", said one of the villagers.
" My dear grand father is not dead", explained Ivan's daughter. We have hidden him, but not his wisdom. Grand father has saved all of our lives!
Then grand father came out of hiding and from that time forth, old people were honoured and respected in that village.

Einstein's tools of profession

Albert Einstein's two tools of his profession were a pencil and his brain, so he could work anywhere- while walking, riding, dining- anytime except while sleeping. He once had an oppointment to meet a friend on a bridge. His friend arrived an hour late and apologized. Einstein, who had been staring down at the water said: " Oh, that's all right. I was busy working ."

Eat Greens

Once Bernard Shaw became very ill and his doctor prescribed meat to give him energy. But the vegetarian Shaw refused " Death is better than cannibalism", he proclaimed. " My will contains directions for my funeral, which will be followed not by mourning coaches. Instead there will be herds of oxen, sheep, swine, flocks of poultry, and a small traveling aquarium of live fish, all wearing white scarves in honor of the man who perished rather than eat his fellow creatures."
